Lyrics

The debut single from My Albatross.

"An irrestible pairing of catchy indie folk songs."

What is Music? review our gig at Manchester Student Union:

01/03/2010

"Finally came the headliners, My Albatross. Their folk-rock balladry translated easily to the acoustic stage, and their rich, practiced vocal harmonies more than made up for the loss of intensity that resulted from the electric-acoustic transition. The highlights of their set were 'Rich Man's Daughter' and recent single 'Live and Live Lonely', which (judging by audience reaction) was a contender for song of the night. Personally, my favourite song was 'Changes', if only for the guitar breakdown at the end where a half-time feel and fantastic vocal melody add up to something truly special. As with every time I see them, I can't help but feel that My Albatross are a band made for much bigger stages than the ones they currently play. A yearly festival goer, I know the kind of tunes that get two thousand people singing along, and the simple fact is that in My Albatross' set these songs abound."

Liam Walsh has written about the new single:

16/02/2010

"After garnering rave reviews from the likes of Radio 1, Radio 2, 6Music and Xfm, My Albatross retreated into the studio to polish their artillery and work on their follow-up single. The time is now right, and after redoubling their efforts to become a major name on the uk alt-rock scene, their second single, Rich Man’s Daughter, arms the boys with everything they’ll need to take on the music industry (and probably the world too).

Glasgow born Dave takes lead vocals again on ‘Rich Man’s Daughter’, a punchy 2 minute affair. The other track ‘I Don’t Love You’, has Sam lending his haunting vocal, which could compare to the fragility of Anthony Hegarty from Anthony and The Johnsons."

Happy New Year to all our fellow Trossers out there

12/01/2010

Happy New year to all you fellow Trossers out there. 2010 looks set to be a big year for My Albatross what with singles, festivals and the possibility of a tour but before we get too far ahead of our selves lets recap on the Story so far.

In June 2008 the boys left London and headed for the Capital of the North (just for the craic like). What seemed like sheer lunacy at first (especially to their London Fans) soon paid off as the nurturing bosom of the Manchester New Music Scene gave them everything they needed to develop into their current incarnation as a ‘reet proper three piece Manchester band. 2008 was also the year they met the Inimitable Danny Donnelly who (after a rather successful performance at Danny’s legendary Blue Cat Café, which He informs me they “Smashed”) promptly signed them to the soon to be legendary Blue Cat Records.

The rest of 2008 was devoted to creating 15 demo tracks barely scratching the surface of the three songwriter strong band’s back catalogue and ranging from 80’s New wave electro punk to intimate heart wrenching country.

By November the planets were aligning: They had the talent, the songs and the backing. All that was missing now was direction. That’s when Manchester Music Mogul Liam Walsh (Ask Me PR) stepped in to lend a hand.

In the summer of 2009 it was Liam’s contact Al ‘Cappuccino’ Groves that produced the lad’s current single, the luscious ‘Live & Live Lonely’. Al worked with the lads to create that unmistakable ‘My Albatross’ sound that you are enjoying now.

In autumn 2009 things really start to take off with ‘Live & Live Lonely’ catching the attention of the music industry; getting plays on BBC Manchester, Radio 6, Radio 2, XFM and Radio1 and their live shows earning them compliments from such dignitaries as Johnny Marr of ‘The Smiths’ and Mani of ‘The Stone Roses’.

Winter 2009 brought a veritable media snow storm with interviews from Pete Mitchell on XFM ‘Razor Cuts’, Sam Walker BBC Manchester and a slot on the BBC introducing stage at the ‘In the City’ festival where they were honoured by the presence of Hugh Stevens of BBC Radio 1. 2009 was nicely rounded off by Sam Walker, the face (or rather voice) of unsung Manchester music talent, inviting the boys back on her show for mince pies, mulled wine and to play a little Christmas ditty. With most bands opting for tongue in cheek versions of classic Christmas songs Sam and Dave chose a more left field approach and, in the words of Mr Donnelly; ‘smashed it’ with a haunting rendition of Steve Earle’s ‘Nothing But A Child’.

That pretty much brings us up to date (Christmas merriment and New Years Debauchery not with standing).

2010 looks to be the most exciting instalment yet in the My Albatross Manchester adventure with their next single ‘Rich Man’s Daughter’ due for release in February, plans for a nationwide tour and of course festivals galore.

This band really is going from strength to strength but don’t take my word for it, see for yourself take a stroll around the site, scroll down to check out videos and look through the news archive, check out photos of the band on the home page (they sound better then they look), check out gig dates, listen to some of their tracks or if you like what you hear download their current single via the link in the releases section… well what else are you gonna do, check out LOL CATS on YouTube… again?

Enjoy, and here’s to a ‘Smashing’ 2010.

Live Review from Tincan.tv

18/11/2009

Kelly Murray has posted a review of our In The City set on Tincan.tv:

"They may be made up of a Scotsman, an Irish man and an English bloke, but My Albatross have settled in the best British city so they're already on ten points and my Christmas card list.

Repping Manchester on the ‘BBC Introducing' stage at Moho, despite some technical difficulties - ever wonder if such difficulties look more like a soap opera backstage? More CCTV in greenrooms please - the boys pull through like pros and manage to deliver a big build-up tune worthy of a Dawson's Creek cameo in the form of ‘Great Expectations'. With the floppy haired perfect-for-a-teen-heart-throb Sam Jenkins taking lead vocals, the country/rock tale of epic proportions echoes out to flood the room. Indoor shivers anyone? Brrr!"

Live and Live Lonely

Bust up face and bust up cheeks
And a mouth full of busted broken teeth
A cardboard box for the house she keeps
And an eye for the drink and a glass for the street.

Sleeping in her sleeping bag
This living in skin she’s always had
Dreaming of the day before she met her dad
The day was so sad when she had to

Live and live lonely

Festive feeding in the bin
For a bag full of crack she’'ll make you spin
And when the juice comes out so salty and thin
She’ll have to start all over again

She drugs her money so back to the shelter
She feels so high like a helter skelter
Have a bowl of soup as if that would help her
Maybe she’ll be rich in her next life.

Live and live lonely

Twenty years of homeless devotion
Twelve police checks and one abortion
The guy shot of without any notion
Now she’s drowning in a lonely ocean.

Every winter is getting colder
Every year she keeps getting older
A gypsy frightened her when he told her
You won’t be here for too long now.

Live and live lonely

Ten more years of lonely emotion
One more decayed decade of potions
Vaguely in and out of some motion
Till the grave eternal erosion
So live
So live
So live and live lonely
If you want to be the only one who lives
Never enjoying the sun with the rest of us
The lonely ones.

Spending Her Daisies

There’s a may bug in my hair
And I think I know why she’s there
She’s looking for cherries and bright purple berries
And toffees as sweet as the air

Whispering on a breeze
Watched by the worms and the trees
She’s looking to stay in beautiful place
So she’s spending her daisies on me

She moves and tickles my head
With her tiny bristles and legs
She smells the evening as the sun is leaving as
He turns his light off for bed

And all of the stars they can see
From up there know who’s lonely
She whistles on as her wings sing her song
And they know that she wont stay with me

My finger dries my tear
As darkness makes her disappear
And I cant be happy when the night laughs at me
And darkness is all that is here.

And I know that its hard to believe
The nights will get longer each eve
But I wont forget the light of that mid summers night
When she spent all her daises on me.
